Nations League: Romelu Lukaku stars as Belgium win in Iceland

REYKJAVIK, Sept 12 ― Romelu Lukaku scored two goals as World Cup semi-finalists Belgium began their Nations League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win away to Iceland yesterday.

The hosts will need to be in better form against Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard than in their last game, the first without influential manager Heimir Hallgromsson, where they were beaten 6-0 by Switzerland.

Even at three goals down, Iceland was able to retain at least some respectability in response to a weekend showing when Group 2 rival Switzerland ran out 6-0 victor with embarrassing ease.

The Manchester United big striker got on the scoresheet himself later with a close-range finish and also made the score line 3-0 with another wonderful strike deep into the second half.

The host came out rejuvenated at the start of the second half but, once again, it did not last and Thomas Meunier should have added a third when he turned Hazard's pinpoint cross wide. The same man struck the foot of the post shortly afterwards when he looked destined to score, dashing into the area on the right and shooting low past the goalkeeper.

Gylfi Sigurdsson had an early shot deflected as Iceland pressed forward, but once Belgium had taken a decisive 2-0 lead, the hosts struggled to create anything resembling a decent shot on goal.

Yet Hazard was keen to reiterate that Iceland were a tricky opponent.

Lukaku continued his impressive streak of scoring almost a goal a game for Belgium in the past 12 months. Ingason's challenge on Lukaku gave the referee little option but to point to the spot.

After playing his part in that goal, Lukaku chose to take matters into his own hands as after Vincent Kompany saw his header saved, his compatriot was on hand to pounce as his effort crossed the line before it was cleared away, as seen in the video below.
