Scientist declares ailing orca dead

J50 and family

Scarlet is a three-year-old killer whale who was identified by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries to be in poor health in early August. "Unless we do something about salmon recovery, we're just not going to have these whales in the future".

"The Center for Whale Research has had a vessel on the water looking for J50 for the past three days".

J50 has now no longer been seen since final Friday. A sharpshooting veterinarian fired an antibiotic-filled stride into her, crews dropped are dwelling salmon in front of her to acquire a see at to regain her to consume, and scientists even mulled taking pictures her so they could per chance perchance diagnose and treat her.

"The remains have sunk, no doubt, because she was so skinny that she didn't have anything that would float her", said Balcomb, who tracks killer whales.

NOAA spokesman Michael Milstein said the search for J50 continues. But, he said, because the United States and Canadian governments have so many resources devoted to finding her, they planned to continue searching on Friday.

"The chances of her being alive at this point are quite slim, based on how many days it's been since she's been with her family and also based on quite an intensive effort that's underway to find her", he said. "We haven't given up hope". The U.S. Coast Guard is also staying on watch for the missing orca and issuing a notice for mariners to be on the lookout.

He said the last sighting was by a biologist on Friday evening and her pod, including her mother, has been seen off the coast of British Columbia and Washington state since then without the three-year-old whale.

The distinctive black-and-white orcas, known as southern resident killer whales, have struggled since they were listed as an endangered species in the USA and Canada well over a decade ago. The survival of J50 is critical to, with the number of orcas able to reproduce declining. Earlier in the summer, a 20-year-old whale known as J35 carried her dead calf for weeks.

The message, the Heart for Whale Learn mentioned in a web situation post, is that extinction is looming "whereas the humans convene job forces and conference calls that outcome in nothing, or worse than nothing, diverting consideration and resources from solving the underlying ecological complications".

Scientist began to be concerned about J50 in July.

Drone images taken earlier this month showed J50 much thinner than she was previous year. No one could pinpoint her exact ailment, but the majority of whales with that condition do not survive.
