Typhoon Mangkhut leaves trail of destruction in China

A super typhoon made landfall in China's Guangdong on Sunday, the country's most populous province, after wreaking havoc in Hong Kong and Macau and killing potentially more than 50 people in the Philippines. China sugar futures rose last week on fears for the cane crop.

Most of the deaths in the Philippines were caused by landslides in the Cordillera and Nueva Vizcaya regions, officials say.

The plans of tens of thousands of travellers were disrupted by flight cancellations at Hong Kong's global airport, a major regional hub.

Vietnam was struck by a record-breaking number of 16 tropical storms past year that left 389 people dead or missing and injured 668 others, mostly in northern and central regions.

Francis Tolentino, a political adviser to President Rodrigo Duterte, told the BBC that he estimated only a fifth of produce there had been harvested in advance - threatening staples like rice and corn.

More than 2.4 million people had been evacuated in southern China's Guangdong province by Sunday evening to flee the massive typhoon and almost 50,000 fishing boats were called back to port, state media reported.

Hong Kong authorities were surveying the extent of Typhoon Mangkhut's damage to this city of 7.3 million as winds of up to 190 km an hour shook buildings, caused storm surges and fell trees across roads and pavements.

Five million people were in its path and more than 100,000 sheltered in temporary centres.

But by and large, life was gradually returning to normal along the hard-hit southern Chinese coast on Monday, where high-rises swayed, coastal hotels flooded and windows were blown out as a result of Typhoon Mangkhut.

While there were criticisms that the government could have acted more swiftly, Mr Eric Ong said: "I think this time round there was sufficient time or warnings given to citizens in Hong Kong".

"We're already poor and then this (storm) happened to us".

Separately, the coastguard said it had recovered the bodies of three people. In addition to the 25 killed in the Philippines, a woman was swept out to sea in Taiwan.

There were 1,500 reports of fallen trees, 600 obstacles blocking roads and 400 to 500 cases of broken or collapsed windows and furnishings, Mr Lee said. "It's a race against time", Tai O resident Lau King-cheung told AFP by phone.

A couple and child were seen by an AFP reporter taking pictures on a pier known as a popular Instagram spot as waves surged into it and nearly submerged it. "The wind is so strong".

Flooding was more severe in nearby Macau, where 17 people were reported injured and 20,000 households lost power, according to the South China Morning Post.

As the storm moved south past Macau, its streets became submerged under water gushing from the harbour.

When contacted, Mr Eric Ong, head of retail banking at OCBC Wing Hang said the bank is adopting a flexible approach towards staff who found it hard to get back to work after Typhoon Mangkhut.

The government and casinos are taking extra precautions after Macau was battered by Typhoon Hato previous year, which left 12 dead.
