Florence aftermath: Rivers are rising in the Carolinas, cresting at record levels

Forty-four people were killed and 660 injured when the powerful earthquake rattled Hokkaido this month causing considerable damage

Four days after Florence blew ashore and began unloading more than 2 feet of rain that paralyzed much of North Carolina, Wilmington was still virtually cut off from the rest of the state, with just one road tentatively open as a supply route. Southbound travelers from Virginia should detour to the western part of North Carolina, then go south and east to link up with I-95 South again, officials said.

The storm has claimed lives in three states, including 25 in North Carolina, according to a count by the Associated Press.

The Japanese city of Sapporo has pulled out of the bidding to host the 2026 Winter Olympics after the quake in Hokkaido, the International Olympic Committee said on Monday, adding that the city would focus on bidding for the 2030 Games.

Ahead of the storm that hit September 14, the VA closed five hospitals and 18 community-based outpatient clinics in the southeast coastal regions of South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.

Crews have conducted about 700 rescues in New Hanover County, where Wilmington is located.

"There's too much going on", he told a news conference.

The advisory from the Fayetteville, North Carolina VA Medical Center was typical of others across the state where rivers were still on the rise and damaged roads and washed-out bridges made rescue and relief efforts risky.

An initial estimate from Moody's Analytics placed the cost of Hurricane Florence between $17billion (£13billion) and $22bn (£17 billion).

Cooper said about 2,600 people were rescued in North Carolina, along with 300 animals, and that the rescues were continuing.

Others got a case of bottled water or military MREs, or field rations.

The South Carolina National Guard says in a news release that Gov. Henry McMaster was to meet Tuesday with U.S. Air Force Gen. Terrence J.

State officials have continually warned people not to drive through water.

One road was opened into Wilmington at least briefly, and items have been brought into the city by big military trucks and helicopters.

As the water recedes, NCDOT will still need time to inspect the roads to make sure they are safe before reopening them, said NCDOT spokesman Steve Abbott.

He added that "this storm has never been more unsafe than it is right now" in some parts of North Carolina.

Eric Tryggeseth, 59, found his home in Leland, North Carolina, without power on Monday and a tree laying in his front yard.

Large segments of the major corridor also were closed in North Carolina, making north-south travel subject to long detours.

The storm has set rainfall records in several locations in North Carolina, including Swansboro, with a whopping 34 inches, Hoffman Forest with 29.48 inches and Sunny Point with 27.44 inches.
