Christine Blasey Ford's colleagues point to her integrity amid confirmation controversy

U.S. President Donald Trump answers a question about the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court and allegations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh during a joint news conference with Poland's President Andrzej Duda in the East Room of the White House in Washington, U.S., September 18, 2018. When she went to use the bathroom, she claims she was pushed into a bedroom by Kavanaugh, and that he pinned her down and, laughing, tried to take off her clothes. John Kennedy (R-LA) emphasized that she, through her lawyer, had asked for a public hearing earlier this week. Around the same time she wrote a letter describing the alleged incident to her California congresswoman, Democrat Anna Eshoo, who relayed it to California senator Dianne Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the Senate judiciary committee.

"We've offered Dr. Ford the opportunity to share her story with the committee, as her attorney said yesterday she was willing to do".

Christine Blasey Ford said that she would not testify next week, unless there is a proper FBI investigation first.

Mr Kavanaugh, 53, says the allegation against him is "completely false". "I am friends, I've been friends with him for years", said Meghan McCaleb.

"Hopefully the woman will come forward, state her case".

Trump has already rejected the idea of bringing in the Federal Bureau of Investigation to reopen its background check of Kavanaugh.

Manafort pleaded guilty last week to criminal charges stemming from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's inquiry into Russian interference in the U.S. 2016 presidential election and possible co-ordination between the Trump campaign and Moscow. Judge, the friend who was allegedly involved in the incident, spoke to The Weekly Standard before Ford came forward publicly, and said: "It's just absolutely nuts".

Sarah Adler, a former student of Ford's who is now a clinical psychologist at Stanford, co-organized a letter in support of her former professor that had been signed by more than 300 colleagues and former students by Tuesday afternoon.

"I support Senator Grassley's decision to have these 11th-hour allegations thoroughly reviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee, and weighed against Judge Kavanaugh's decades of public service, sterling record on the bench, outstanding personal reputation, and his unequivocal denial of the allegations", the Indianapolis Star quoted Braun as saying.

President Trump, who could order an FBI background check investigation into the allegations, instead put the onus on Blasey Ford to testify.

Republicans are suggesting that Ford will have one chance to testify, and one chance only. "Only then should the chairman set a hearing date", the Senator said.

Brett Kavanaugh listens to Senators on day three of his confirmation hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee to be Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on September 6, 2018. Harry Reid (D) of Nevada, when he was Senate majority leader.

Republicans have charged Democrats with attempting to stymie the confirmation until after the November midterm elections, and with weaponizing Ford's allegation to achieve that political end.
