President Trump visits Carolinas to see Florence damage, recovery

NBA legend Michael Jordan, who played high school basketball in Wilmington, North Carolina -one of the areas devastated by Hurricane Florence- is donating $2 million to assist residents of the Carolinas.

"It's truly devastating to see the damage the Hurricane Florence is doing to my beloved home state of North Carolina and to the surrounding areas", Jordan said Tuesday in a team statement. "The recovery effort will be massive, and it will take a long time to fix the damage and for the families to get back on their feet".

Trump spent the run-up to the storm focused on criticism of the federal response to a hurricane that battered Puerto Rico past year, rejecting the official death toll of almost 3,000 and claiming Democrats manufactured the number to make him "look bad".

After submerging North Carolina with almost 3 feet (1 meter) of rain, the storm dumped more than 6.5 inches (16.5 centimeters) of rain in the Northeast, where it caused flash flooding.

The president traveled south Wednesday as the region continues to grapple with the aftermath of a storm that North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said was "epic".

And the effects from the slow-moving storm were still being felt Tuesday as record inland river flooding was impacting areas such as Pollocksville in Jones County, where USA 17 was impassable.

President Donald Trump, meanwhile, arrived in storm-ravaged North Carolina today.

Motorists are being warned that they risk being surrounded by water in North Carolina if they use popular Global Positioning System navigation apps such as Waze, Apple Maps and Google Maps. A woman blew a whistle each time drivers had to pull forward.

In addition, more than 100 members of the Hornets organization will help pack disaster food boxes Friday at Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte, North Carolina. Marion County Coroner Jerry Richardson told The Associated Press that the women, detainees being transported to a mental health facility, drowned at around 6 p.m. Tuesday when a van tried to cross a roadway and was overtaken by water.

Todd Tremain needed tarps to cover up spots where Florence's winds ripped shingles off his roof. The Cape Fear river was expected to crest at 61.5ft (19 meters), four times its normal height, on Wednesday in Fayetteville, a city of 200,000 near the Fort Bragg army base in the southern part of the state, according to the National Weather Service. An olive-green military forklift moved around huge pallets loaded with supplies.

"It's been pretty bad", said Echavarrieta, 34, his voice breaking.

The city manager told CNN that 12,000 people were "in harm's way".

North Carolina DOT officials have asked for days that out of state drivers to avoid driving in the state if possible. "We've never had it at those levels before so we don't really know what the impact will be just yet", he said.

Sanderson Farms, a major poultry producer in the state, said it lost about 1.7 million chickens after flooding at more than 60 of the independent farms that supply its poultry processing plants.
