Serena breaks silence on Open storm

NEW YORK Naomi Osaka of Japan poses with the championship trophy after winning the US Open AFP

"We've never had signals".

SERENA Williams has broken her silence for the first time on the sensational US Open outburst that turned the women's final into an global controversy.

Despite coach Patrick Mouratoglou admitting he was coaching from the box, Williams doubled down on her claim, insisting she knew nothing about it.

Williams later smashed her racquet, resulting in a code violation and a point deduction, which she argued over with Ramos.

He alleged that she had broken the rules by receiving coaching, and gave her subsequent code violations for smashing her racket and for verbally abusing him.

"I don't understand what he was talking about", she added. "She's powerfully built, she wears these outrageous costumes when she plays tennis - she's interesting to draw", Mr Knight said.

In Williams' semi-final match in 2009 against Belgian Kim Clijsters, her deplorable behaviour was whistled by most spectators, but her outburst while losing against Osaka has drawn public support for this foul-mouthed great of women's tennis. She was later fined $17,000.

Serena Williams maintained in her first television interview since her stunning upset at the U.S. Open last week that she did not cheat - and further blasted what she sees as the double standard between male and female tennis players.

It was Ramos's first assignment since the US Open as Croatia rallied to beat the US 3-2 and make the Davis Cup final.

Sarah Robb O'Hagan, chief executive of Flywheel Sports, lauded Williams for calming the audience at the US Open final after it started booing.

"It isn't the first time you have had to deal with unfair judgment against you, and yet you have this incredible ability to come back with such courage and grace", she said, before steering the conversation away from the US Open drama. "Especially if it can affect the future and affect a lot of people in the future".

Burning issues that stir the student psyche SERENA WILLIAMS PENALISED AT US OPENAditya Narayan, Fergusson CollegeIn the controversy that 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams has recently been embroiled in, I think it's clear enough that the racket abuse and the verbal abuse she committed were liable to be penalised. "And I'm working incredibly hard at being a mom".
