Egypt hotel couple's deaths 'inconclusive' after autopsy

A tearful Kelly Ormerod outside Preston Coroners Court in Preston

Last month, British holidaymakers John and Susan Cooper died after falling ill suddenly during an all-inclusive stay at a plush hotel in Hurghada.

It comes after the Express exclusively revealed on September 2 that the British government had protested to the Egyptian government about its secretive investigation into the deaths of a British couple, diplomatic sources said yesterday.

Susan and John Cooper were staying in one room with their 12-year-old granddaughter, Molly, while their daughter Kelly Ormerod stayed in another room with her two other children.

Forensic examinations by the Egyptian authorities, which reported the cause of deaths as being linked to E.coli bacteria, were subsequently dismissed by the couple's daughter Kelly Ormerod.

Ms Ormerod attended the brief hearing at Preston Coroner's Court where James Adeley, senior coroner for Blackburn with Darwen, passed on his condolences as the inquests were opened and adjourned until a date to be fixed.

A statement from Smith Jones said: "At this stage it is too early to speculate on the outcome of those investigations although it is fair to say that Kelly and her family have considerable concerns regarding the accuracy of recent reports emanating from the Egyptian authorities concerning the causes of death".

Dr Adeley said: "Shortly after this Mr Cooper collapsed in the room and could not be revived and was verified to have died at noon". Mrs Cooper had a heart attack in an ambulance on the way to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A BURNLEY couple on holiday in Egypt moved their granddaughter out of their hotel room hours before they died as a "musty smell" had left her feeling unwell.

The company said it was unclear what caused the deaths of the couple in their 60s, while Egyptian authorities initially pointed to natural causes and said there were no signs of violence.

There is a request for family flowers only but donations are being accepted to Dementia UK and the Masonic charities c/o Alderson and Horan Funeral Services, Rossendale Road, Burnley.

Lawyers for the couple's daughter said today that the initial examination of the couple's bodies after they were returned to the United Kingdom last week had failed to establish a cause of death and further tests are being carried out.
