Feds approve importation of pot drug for study

Tilray's announcement that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration had given it the green light to import a drug needed for a clinical trial at the University of California San Diego appeared to trigger Tuesday's run.

The drastic swings in the stock follow a almost 30 per cent jump on Tuesday after the Nanaimo, B.C. - based firm announced it got the green light from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to export cannabis in capsule form to a researcher at a university in the U.S., where the drug is still illegal at the federal level. "It's showing that these cannabinoids may be effective at treating a number of diseases that people hadn't thought of before". The U.S. has a program for supplying it for research through the National Institute on Drug Abuse, with cannabis grown by the University of MS, but scientists have long complained about the difficulty of obtaining it, as well as the quality and limited variety of the pot available.

NIDA doesn't offer capsules, so the researchers spent about two years going through regulatory hoops to obtain permission to import the drug from Canada, where medical marijuana is federally legal and where recreational sales begin nationwide next month. "There are definitely situations where, when there's no source in the USA, a registrant can import a cannabis-derived drug from another country". ET usually worsens over time and often becomes a common cause of embarrassment, social withdrawal, disability and loss of occupation for those with the disorder.

Yet marijuana for study is typically only available in dry-bud form or cigarettes, cultivated at the University of MS and provided via the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Fatta Nahab, a neurologist at UC San Diego and the principal investigator for the study, said his first exposure to the idea of using cannabis to treat the disorder came a few years ago when a young male patient who he'd been tracking suddenly showed an improvement in his tremors.

NIDA, which does intend to expand how much marijuana the University of MS grows for research, does not yet provide marijuana compounds in capsules, said Don Stanford, assistant director of the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the university.

"CMCR is excited to collaborate with Dr. Nahab on a study for a difficult-to-treat condition for which cannabinoids may provide a new therapeutic avenue", said Igor Grant, MD, CMCR director and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Researchers say it's tough to measure the dose someone receives when they inhale pot. All study participants will be gradually administered an oral cannabis formulation with a 20:1 ratio of CBD to THC. They also had to get safety approvals from the university and present their plans to a California research advisory panel. Researchers will monitor the tremors with a device placed on the wrist and record changes in the severity of the shaking. Tilray said this "was primarily due to the increase in operating expenses related to continued growth, expansion of worldwide teams, and costs related to financing and the initial public offering".
