Highlights: EU leaders' comments ahead of summit in Austria

Theresa May was left fighting to save her Chequers Brexit plan and with it her authority as prime minister after she was ambushed at the end of the Salzburg summit when European Union leaders unexpectedly declared that her proposals would not work.

May had gone to Salzburg and pitched Chequers in person to the EU27, hoping for encouraging words for her plan, which seeks to smooth the path for post-Brexit trade with the continent, and keep borders as open as possible, by closely tying British regulations and tariffs to Europe's.

That plan "remains the only serious and credible proposition on the table", she said.

To a considerable extent, the European Council president, Donald Tusk, has been a friend of the United Kingdom in the negotiations, working to find common ground and smoothing over some of the differences.

European Union leaders say that is "cherry picking" on the part of Britain, which would be able to go its own way in services and on other issues such as the freedom of movement of labour. The Chequers plan can not be take it or leave it.

Tusk cast doubt on a special Brexit summit pencilled in for November, saying if sufficient progress towards a deal wasn't made in the next four weeks that meeting would not go ahead.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar complained that May had not presented any fresh proposals for the Irish border, despite promising them.

Tonight, I will ask for support for our efforts to intensify cooperation with North African countries and the idea of calling an EU-League of Arab States summit in Egypt in February next year.

- Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said his country is better prepared for a no-deal Brexit than Britain and an agreement is "not easy" because of Mrs May's red lines.

There is no way she can get her "no deal" through Parliament.

Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, said there could be "no compromise" on the integrity of the single market, the bloc's economic free-trade zone.

Her comments came hours after Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab threatened to undermine the Chequers proposal by admitting it was "not perfect".

Adding: "It's even more true since they left the day after so as not to have to deal with it".

He stressed again that Ireland is preparing for a no-deal scenario but said he believes a deal can be reached.

As reported by RTÉ News yesterday, the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier will suggest that of the four categories of checks and controls that would normally apply between the European Union and a third country, only live animals and agri-food checks would need to take place at British ports on goods going to Northern Ireland.

"Unfortunately we can not at this stage exclude a no deal".

Chief among them was Tuesday's revelation by BMW, first reported by Sky News, that it would shut down manufacturing at its Mini plant outside Oxford for a month after Brexit day next year because of the potential for supply chain disruption.

"I think Chequers now has no supporters at all".

Sir Mike Penning, a former defence minster who voted Leave before backing Mrs May for the party leadership in the aftermath of the referendum, told the Telegraph she had treated Tory MPs "like children who belong on the naughty step".

A senior British government official also said it would bring forward a backstop proposal for regulatory checks on goods crossing into and from Northern Ireland, raising the possibility of a breakthrough.
