Imran Khan writes to PM Modi says Pakistan ready to restart dialogue on trade religion terrorism

The government must respond with great caution to Prime Minister Imran Khan's written letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking resumption of comprehensive bilateral dialogue. In response, the prime minister penned a letter to his Indian counterpart and expressed his desire to renew dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Khan's letter is also the first formal proposal by either side for a substantive engagement between India and Pakistan since government formation in Pakistan last month.

Pakistan and India have an undeniably challenging relationship, the Pakistan prime minister said, adding,"we owe it to our people especially future generations to peacefully resolve all outstanding issues, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute Siachen and Sir Creek". "Foreign Minister hadn't stated Indian PM had made an offer of dialogue but had said that Indian PM in his letter to PM Imran Khan, had also mentioned something similar to what Foreign Minister elucidated earlier i.e. the way forward was only through constructive engagement", read Pakistan statement.

His tour of the Gulf comes as a Pakistani court on Wednesday ordered the release of his political rival, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, suspending their prison sentences for corruption pending an appeal hearing.

According to the report in The Times of India, PM Khan specifically sought a meeting between Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in NY later this month.

According to reports, this is the first concrete step for resolution of differences between India and Pakistan since 2015, when Swaraj had attended a "Heart of Asia" conference in Islamabad. On Wednesday, the USA specifically said that Pakistan based terror groups like Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba, which operate in Kashmir, continue to pose a serious threat to the region.

Khan has also sought a meeting between India-Pakistan foreign ministers.

"If they take one step towards us, we will take two, but we at least need a start", he had said.

With a view to developing tangible and meaningful bilateral cooperation in key areas, the two countries agreed to intensify consultations and coordination in order to strengthen their strategic partnership.
