All 27 European Union leaders believe current Brexit trade plan "will not work"

"If we feel that we are able to finalise and formalise our deal in November, I will call this extraordinary meeting, but not as an emergency but as a punchline of effective negotiations before October and during our October EU council meeting", he said.

But at a press conference in which she appeared visibly angry, Mrs May said the United Kingdom would "shortly" be coming forward with new proposals for the backstop at the border.

She said: "I believe that I have put forward serious and workable proposals". "The shambles in Salzburg leaves us without a coherent or plausible Brexit plan", the paper says. "The UK expects the same. A good relationship at the end of this process depends on it".

The Daily Express says the failure to reach an agreement, two years after Britain voted for Brexit, is "entirely the fault of the EU".

Concern was mounting at the informal summit that no final Brexit deal will be approved ahead of the March 31, 2019 deadline and that no plan for a smooth and orderly British exit from the bloc.

So how will the EU's major players go about solving a problem like Theresa?

"It's not acceptable to simply reject the other side's proposals without a detailed explanation and counter proposals", May said. What we want to avoid is any new barriers to the movement of goods, any new barriers to trade, any new barriers to the movement of people.

Rahman said that while the British wanted to rely on technology to avoid having a hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, the Europeans are very skeptical that technology was enough.

"I will not overturn the result of the referendum nor will I break up my country", she said.

But he added that after the Salzburg summit, he's feeling a "little more optimistic" about the possibility the sides will come to an agreement.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar - who met Mrs May on the sidelines of the summit - said there are elements of the Chequers plan that can inform further negotiations and indicated there is room for compromise once the fundamental demands of Ireland and the European Union are met.

Mrs May addressed EU27 leaders over wiener schnitzel with potatoes and Austrian wine, pitching her Chequers proposal before sit-down meetings begin on Thursday.

"We are going to leave the European Union".

For the British media, the message from Salzburg was clear.

Over a private dinner in Salzburg, the prime minister announced hopes for a "shared close future" but warned "we never said Brexit would be easy".

Mrs May is also now looking at significant difficulty as she faces her party conference in ten days time.

May has rejected an EU proposal to keep the province in a customs union with the bloc if they fail to reach a deal to keep the entire EU-UK border open, instead offering a time-limited customs arrangement that would cover the whole of Britain.

Earlier, the leaders of the Czech Republic and Malta had suggested a second referendum should be held to give the British people the chance to rethink Brexit.

However, May signalled that Britain may be willing to compromise on another sticking point in the talks, on a fall-back plan to avoid frontier checks until it can be resolved through a wider trade deal.

"But of course, language, detail, how you actually achieve those things I think any reasonable person who wants to get an agreement has to be willing to compromise on those things", he said, adding that a deal was in everyone's interest. Scotland's top court ruled on Friday that the European Court of Justice should consider whether Britain could unilaterally change its mind on Brexit.
