Tensions rise as European Union prepares for final Brexit stretch

The European Council on October 18 is the deadline for substantial progress towards a Brexit deal, giving the prime minister just 28 days to find a plan palatable to her party, MPs and the EU.

The judgment of British newspapers on Friday was brutal. His Remain-supporting Conservative colleague Anna Soubry compared May's Brexit plan to a dead parrot, while Iain Duncan Smith, a leading pro-Brexit MP, said that Chequers "clearly isn't going to fly".

Some report that the Prime Minister has been left angry yet defiant following the rejection of her Brexit proposals, while other say she has been left fighting to save her plans - and her premiership.

European Union officials have been cool on the plan from the start, saying Britain can't "cherry-pick" elements of membership in the bloc without accepting all the costs and responsibilities.

Anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller said the events in Salzburg "stink of incompetence" but said that Mr Tusk's actions were "childish". "It stinks of incompetence, the whole thing, when the moment of reality is only four weeks away", Miller told the BBC.

An official EU summit set for October 18-19 was previously considered the "last chance" for a formal Brexit deal, as any plan must be approved by the United Kingdom parliament, the European Parliament, and the individual legislatures of all 27 remaining EU member states.

Like many leaders, including May, Tusk said, "We need to compromise on both sides".

The Chequers plan could not be regarded as a "take it or leave it" offer, Mr Macron said, adding that he hoped there would be "new British propositions" on the table by October.

The biggest single obstacle to a deal is the need to maintain an open Irish border.

For Ireland, it's important not to undermine the hard-won peace after decades of sectarian tensions in neighboring Northern Ireland. "We want to avoid a 'No Deal Brexit, ' but we are preparing for that".

May also reportedly hadn't been helped by a BI story on Thursday that revealed Liam Fox, her trade secretary, was quietly plotting to use controversial government powers to scrap European Union food standards in preparation for a trade deal with the US.

May reportedly made a decision to read out an opinion piece she wrote for German newspaper Die Welt this week, in which she described the EU's Brexit proposals as unacceptable and not credible.

May was hopeful she would find enough support in the room to force Barnier into compromise - at least amongst the likes of Hungary and Poland, whose governments are not on good terms with the European Union leadership.

Pro-EU politicians don't like the Chequers plan either, saying it will cut the U.K.'s vast services sector out of the single market.

Mrs May promised new proposals to reassure Dublin that it would not end up with a "hard border" with the British province of Northern Ireland but warned that she too could live with a no-deal outcome - though many around the summit in Salzburg do not believe that that is a credible threat.
