Theresa May in a Brexit crisis after her Salzburg humiliation

However, to avoid being defeated on the crucial bill, Theresa May promised Grieve's group that she would give Parliament "a meaningful say" on the final deal.

The Sun went much further: "EU Dirty Rats - Euro mobsters ambush May", it said alongside a mocked up picture of French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President Donald Tusk cast as American gangsters with guns.

The Times says there are still "reasons to believe that reasonable arguments on both sides of the Channel will prevail before time runs out". The Bank of England has warned that house prices would crash, businesses fret over chaos at the Channel ports and airlines worry that the agreements that keep planes in the air across Europe would fall away.

Both sides are trying to reach a deal in time and want to avoid a hard border - meaning any physical infrastructure like cameras or guard posts - between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic but can not agree on how.

Tusk warned that the clock is ticking.

The UK is still due to leave the European Union on 29 March 2019.

Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, said there could be "no compromise" on the integrity of the single market, the bloc's economic free-trade zone. "Therefore, every day that is left, we must use for talks".

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has reportedly written to United Kingdom opposition leaders calling for them to back an extension to Article 50 if no deal is reached and warned the PM against taking the country "off the Brexit cliff edge".

European Union leaders refused to give ground to Britain's Theresa May on Thursday, warning that her Brexit plan is unacceptable even as she offered to come up with new proposals for the Irish border. But nothing official will come out of the two days in Salzburg, as it is an informal meeting.

May was hopeful she would find enough support in the room to force Barnier into compromise - at least amongst the likes of Hungary and Poland, whose governments are not on good terms with the European Union leadership.

On Wednesday, Tusk announced a special Brexit summit in November, when he hopes a deal will be "finalized".

The timetable has been set, but the route to the destination is still to be determined.

"What we want to avoid is any new barriers to the movement of goods, any new barriers to trade, any new barriers to the movement of people", Varadkar said.

In his press conference last night, Mr Macron said: 'Brexit is the choice of the British people and it is a choice pushed by certain people who predicted easy solutions, ' he said in Salzburg, ' he said.

"With just weeks to go until a deal must be struck, the Prime Minister can not keep ignoring this reality".

Conservative MPs from all sides are now rounding on May in order to force her to drop her so-called Chequers plan.

Macron, meanwhile, expressed contempt for pro-Brexit British politicians who told the public there would be "simple solutions" to leaving.

"The Brexit teaches us something - and I completely respect British sovereignty when I say that - it showed that those who say that we can easily live without Europe, that everything is going to be alright, and that it's going to bring in a lot of money are liars", he said.

She stated: "Of course it is concerning that we are still in a place where it is not clear to everybody what is going to happen and when and how it is going to happen".
