Firefighter loses hose to firenado

Canadian firefighters battle fire tornado for control of their hose

In the video posted to Instagram by firefighter Mary Schidlowsky, three crew members can be seen in a tug of war against what she calls a "fire tornado", which is sucking a hose skyward like a kite string.

Schidlowsky said it rose more than 100 feet in the air and sucked up their fire hose.

Newly released video shows firefighters in Canada battling a fire tornado. "That's definitely a first", Schidlowsky writes in the post.

Eventually the firenado grew to over 200 feet tall, she added, but the smoke was too thick to see it clearly in the video.

According to local media, the fire tornado was caused by a mix of the heat rising off the wildfire and high winds.

"It's like a dust devil or a fire whirl-it sucks in the debris and that's what makes it a fire tornado", British Columbia Wildfire information officer Forrest Tower told the CBC.

One of them rushes out of their fire truck and gets pulled toward the funnel cloud but loses his grip on the hose, and turns back.

The video was captured August 19 near Vanderhoof while crews were fighting the Chutanli Lake fire.
