Heads up 'Star Trek' fans, scientists have just discovered the planet Vulcan

However, the planet in question, HD 26965, even though it's not officially known as Vulcan and apparently doesn't house green-blooded aliens on it, orbits a Sun-like star found about 16-light-years away from the Earth that was claimed by Gene Roddenberry, the Star Trek creator, as the host star for his fictional planet Vulcan, the world of origin for Mr. Spock.

"It's so exciting! Star Trek imagined this planet Vulcan, and now we've found this planet", said Jian Ge, an astronomer at the University of Florida, and the co-author of a new study. It spends 43 days of its orbit in the habitable zone of its star so life may be found on its surface. The new planet Vulcan is the closest super-Earth that's been discovered orbiting a star similar to our sun. "Therefore, HD 26965 may be an ideal host star for an advanced civilization". Its distance makes it a decent focus for researchers searching for planets around different stars.

40 Eridani is a real-life orange dwarf star, ranging about 4 billion years in age, about the same as our sun.

Scientists discovered the planet using the 50-inch Dharma Endowment Foundation Telescope (DEFT) located atop Mt. Lemmon in southern Arizona. "I am very grateful to the donor of our Dharma Planet Survey, Mr. Mickey Singer, who recognized the importance of this project and has continuously provided support to make this and future discoveries possible". Namely, the real Vulcan is tidally locked to its host star.

This discovery is critical for scientists in and of itself.

The exoplanet has to do with two times the dimension of Planet and is considered the closest "super-Earth" orbiting a sunlike star.

"Star Trek fans may know the star HD 26965 by its alternative moniker, 40 Eridani A", says Henry, who collected precise brightness measurements of the star at TSU's automated observatory needed to confirm the presence of the planet. Afterwards, 40 Eridani was featured in a handful of scenes of Star Trek: Enterprise. In contrast Epsilon Eridani is barely 1 billion years old. But new findings show that an exoplanet is orbiting the real star that Vulcan is said to be circling in Star Trek.

It is, however, an interesting subject to ponder upon that which way of life adapts on other planets and does life only appear in a form where humans can see themselves surviving on it. Although not mentioned in the original TV series or later feature films, a number of stars had been put forward by Trekkies as the likely locale of Vulcan. They would gleam brilliantly in the Vulcan sky.
