Hunt for sharks responsible for two horror attacks in Whitsundays

Justine Barwick was attacked by a shark while on an annual trip with her husband and friends

Her father accompanied her on the flight. The family lives in Melbourne but is originally from New Zealand, the Courier Mail reports.

The victims were in critical but stable condition with leg wounds in hospitals in the Queensland state capital Brisbane.

The rescue helicopter landed on the shore of Whitsunday Island and water police ferried the helicopter's doctor and paramedic out to the vessel Miss Denero.

Surgeons are attempting to save Justine Barwick's leg and she may need to learn how to walk again.

Marine Biologist Blake Chapman said it's more likely the Cid Harbour attacks were a mistake by sharks that had strayed into the area due to changed environmental conditions, such as prey movement.

The girl was given pain relief and three pints of blood on the flight to hospital.

The girl was transported to Brisbane's Lady Cilento Children's Hospital from Queensland's Mackay Hospital at midday on Friday (NZ time) following the Thursday afternoon attack.

The 12-year-old had very large wounds and first-aiders did a wonderful job, Ms Eastwick said.

The 12-year-old girl who was seriously injured in a shark attack in Australia has been named.

Her two daughters plan to fly from Tasmania to Queensland when their mother is less heavily sedated.

Queensland Ambulance Service Rockhampton manager Mindy Thomas said they sent a helicopter from Mackay and a paramedic from Hamilton Island.

"We're are also working with relevant government agencies in relation to both incidents", Mr Vanek said in a statement on Friday.

Melbourne girl Hannah Papps, 12, was bitten by a shark just one day after Justine Barwick.

Fisheries Queensland shark control programme manager Jeff Krause said he had never seen anything like this happen in such a close geographical area.

Baited drum lines were being installed today to try to catch some of the sharks, and will stay the water over the weekend, to be re-evaulated next week, he said.

Both were attacked by a shark at Cid Harbour, with the rescue of both victims conducted by the RACQ CQ chopper.

"We really need a concerted effort to hunt risky sharks out of those waters, not just at Cid Harbour but around the Whitsundays", Liberal MP and Member for Dawson George Christensen said.

Ms Barwick has also been transferred to Brisbane and is in a stable condition in the intensive care unit at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.
