SpaceX moon passenger to invite artists on journey

"This is my lifelong dream", he explained. In 2016, he paid more than $110 million at an auction for Jean-Michel Basquiat's 1982 painting called "Untitled". He bought an entire spaceship, and he intends to people it with 6-8 artists from different countries and representing different styles of art. "Together with Earth's top artists, I will be heading to the Moon... just a little earlier than everyone else", Maezawa wrote on his website for the project, #dearMoon. He expects that these masterpieces will inspire the dreamers in us.

Until now, Americans are the only ones who have left Earth's orbit. SpaceX's ability to reach Mars and set up an outpost will depend on it.

Yasuka Maezawa, or "MZ" as SpaceX's newest benefactor prefers to be called, is a Japanese entrepreneur, art collector, billionaire, and skateboarder who made his fortune in the fashion industry over the past 20 years.

Musk described Maezawa as incredibly courageous and said his desire to participate in and pay for this trip restored Musk's faith in humanity. He stepped forward to do it. "We are honoured that he chose us".

Elon Musk, said previous year that we would see two humans take a trip to the Moon at some point in 2018, but that isn't happening.

The trip will take four or five days, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said at the event.

"This is risky, to be clear". He also encouraged Musk to join the mission.

"When you are pushing the frontier, it is not a sure thing". There's always a chance that "something will go wrong".

SpaceX is likely to announce the name of the first man to go on a journey to the moon today (Monday). The first portion of the system has already been built, Musk said.

This isn't the first time Musk has vowed to send tourists around the Moon.

"In Japan, you look up at the moon, and it looks like a rabbit", he said, noting that 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit in the Chinese zodiac. It aims to launch its first crewed mission to the space station in the second quarter of 2019.

It's time to find out who SpaceX is sending around the moon on its Big Falcon Rocket.

The BFR is SpaceX's newest rocket, a super powerful launch vehicle with 31 engines and the capacity to lift 150 tons into space.

The flight never materialized, but SpaceX representatives told the Wall Street Journal in June that such a mission remained in the company's plans.

Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic are also battling it out to launch private-sector spacecraft, but neither have so far announced plans as ambitious as SpaceX. Bezos' Blue Origin has been tight-lipped about the price of its tickets, but Reuters reported in July that they could cost in the $200,000 range.
