Special Weather Statement issued as strong winds expected

Expect a blustery start to Saturday

Strong southwesterly winds gusting to near 90 km/h are occurring this afternoon and will continue into early evening.

The winds are then expected to flip around once the cold front moves in and 60 to 70 km/h northwest winds are likely.

"Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage". Huron-Perth is under a wind warning.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for London, Chatham-Kent, Sarnia-Lambton and Oxford, Elgin and Middlesex counties. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm. Gusts of 45-50 miles per hour are expected quite widely with isolated gusts of 55-60 miles per hour possible near the heaviest showers.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop ahead of a cold front beginning this afternoon.

The agency issued the warning shortly after ending a previous warning for Sutton, noting the latest line of thunderstorms is capable of producing very strong wind gusts.

The possibility for severe thunderstorms will end early this evening says the department.

Tornado watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes. Be prepared for severe weather.

The agency advises people to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.

- Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor - Stay away from outside walls and windows - Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary shelters - As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.

Environment Canada yesterday issued severe weather alerts for parts of the Saint Lawrence River Valley which include a strong wind and rainfall warning for Montreal.
