Elizabeth Smart captor caused hotel ruckus her first night out of prison

Wanda Barzee

A woman who helped kidnap Elizabeth Smart and stood by as the Utah girl was sexually assaulted was released from prison Wednesday amid concerns that she remains a threat 15 years after the chilling crime.

She's under federal supervision for the next five years.

FILE - Media cover the Wanda Barzee release from the Utah State Prison in Draper on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018.

Ed Smart said Wednesday that he's heard reports that Barzee still believes in the teachings of David Brian Mitchell, the street preacher who took the teenage Elizabeth Smart from her bedroom at knifepoint in 2002.

Elizabeth Smart says she's moving forward with her life and trying not to live in fear now that one of her kidnappers has been released from prison.

"So do I believe she's risky?"

Barzee and Mitchell treated Smart like a slave and "handmaiden" when she was being held captive.

"And I remember - remember when they used to force me to - to drink alcohol", she said to CBS.

"And then all of a sudden, this man's in my room with a knife at my neck telling me to get up and go with him", said Smart.

A member of the audience asked Smart how that makes her feel. Sure enough, it was Barzee, Mitchell and Smart.

Barzee's attorney, Scott Williams, has confirmed that Barzee has been diagnosed with several mental illnesses, but he's said he's not concerned about her being a danger to the community.

She continued: "I encourage anyone that is experiencing that kind of darkness to find even the smallest speck of hope and hold on to it".

"Ms. Barzee will be thoroughly supervised by very professional and skilled officers at the United States Probation and she will comply with all conditions of her release".

She wrote a book detailing her kidnapping, which is called "My Story", and although she lives a private life these days, the Salt Lake Tribune said she is married and now expecting her third child, according to published reports. Yes, but not just to me. "She would sit right next to me".

The online registry shows Wanda Barzee's conviction on federal and state charges in the 2002 kidnapping of then 14-year-old Smart.

After years of court battles over her competency, Barzee pleaded guilty in federal court in 2009 to kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor. She was transferred to the Utah prison in 2016 after finishing a federal sentence in Texas.

When she was sentenced, a judge ordered her to serve one to 15 years in state prison, which would be done concurrently with the federal sentence.
