Twitter Bug May Have Sent User DMs to Unknown Developers

Twitter Bug Disclosure

A Twitter bug may have sent some people's direct messages to developers who weren't supposed to get them, the company said Friday.

Twitter says that it exterminated the bug within hours of discovering it on September 10th. Those affected had sent direct messages to companies that used a developer to run their Twitter account for customers.

If all those circumstances were met, the wrong developer would have been able to see subscribers' activities - including DMs and protected tweets - for up to two weeks or, more likely, until no activity occurred for a six minute period. They also said the bug was active between May 2017 and September 2018, for nearly 16 months, and affected around one percent of Twitter users.

If you interacted with an account on the platform that utilized Twitter's Account Activity API (AAAPI), there is the chance that your interaction was shared with an unrelated developer.

Twitter now has more than 336 million monthly active users, meaning more than 3 million people are potentially impacted.

Twitter has told an undisclosed number of users their private messages may have been leaked to third-parties for more than a year.

"We haven't found an instance where data was sent to the incorrect party", the company said. "The bug may have caused some of these interactions to be unintentionally sent to another registered developer", the company said.

Those users that were affected by the bug will be contacted directly by Twitter staff, it said, adding that the investigation into the issue was ongoing.

"Any party that may have received unintended information was a developer registered through our developer program, which we have significantly expanded in recent months to prevent abuse and misuse of data", Twitter said in a statement.

Twitter said it reached out to developer partners to make sure they delete any information they shouldn't have. "We recognize and appreciate the trust you place in us, and are committed to earning that trust every day".
