Jimmy Butler Trade Saga: Dan Gilbert, Cavaliers Reportedly Very Interested

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Jimmy Butler (23) controls the ball as Houston Rockets guard Chris Paul (3) defends during the first quarter in Game 2 of the first round of the 2018 NBA Playoffs at Toyota Center in Houston.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cleveland Cavaliers are pursuing a trade for Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Jimmy Butler in light of Butler's request to be dealt to a new team. Butler and Wiggins' tension played out on social media in recent days. The franchise's business operations want to limit the sullying of what had been until now a successful marketing campaign around the franchise's starry young core, league sources said.

The terms of a contract state that Towns is eligible for 30 percent of the team's salary cap should he make an All-NBA team, earn NBA Most Valuable Player, or Defensive Player of the Year honors next season.

We can all rest assured that Daryl Morey will be right in the middle of it all. This would remove leverage from the Timberwolves, giving Butler more power. But Justise Winslow could be put in play because of questions about whether the Heat will keep him if he enters restricted free agency next summer.

The Timberwolves' trade leverage is practically non-existent, as Butler want to be gone and frankly they should want to remove a budding (or not already bloomed) locker room cancer.

The Athletic's Shams Charania has said that Butler is "optimistic" that a trade can happen before training camp.

The former Kentucky product has averaged a double-double in each of his three years in the National Basketball Association, posting 21.3 points and 12.3 rebounds in 2017-18.

"He basically said, 'If you don't get anywhere with [Layden], and you've got something good, bring it to me", another high-ranking league official told ESPN.

Apparently Taylor is giving his approval for a trade. Anyone reading that would conclude the only option for the Timberwolves is to trade him and get something back for him.

That's now in the past, with Towns agreeing to the deal, which could grow to as much as $190 million over the next five years if Towns reaches certain thresholds during this upcoming season.
