New England Patriots almost traded Rob Gronkowski to the Detroit Lions

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady leads the team out prior to the game between the New England Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars

As it turns out, New England had a deal done with the Detroit Lions before the 2018 NFL Draft, but the trade went to shambles when Gronkowski threatened to retire.

According to the report, Gronkowski didn't even return the Lions' phone calls, even though former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is now the team's head coach and former Pats executive Bob Quinn is now the general manager with Detroit.

That was a scenario the tight end wasn't a fan of.

Gronkowski signed a contract extension with New England prior to the National Football League season starting a couple weeks ago.

Gronkowski, 29, pondered walking away altogether following Super Bowl LII in February, but he met with Patriots brass to discuss his future, which included only catching balls from quarterback Tom Brady. With Gordon out and Julian Edelman suspended, only three wide receivers - Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett and Cordarrelle Patterson - will lineup on offense.

Over two career games against the Packers, Gronkowski has eight catches for 123 yards and no touchdowns.

The receiver tweaked his hamstring before he was traded, and Rapoport said the team is preparing for Sunday's game for both scenarios involving Gordon.
