Porsche ends diesel production for good

Porsche Panamera

Now, some six months later, Porsche has finally confirmed that it will "no longer offer vehicles with diesel propulsion", and instead focus on hybrids and pure electric vehicles like the upcoming Taycan, which is due to be launched next year. "Porsche doesn't condemn diesel".

German carmaker Porsche has stopped manufacturing diesel models in the wake of parent company Volkswagen's emissions scandal.

As a result, carmakers around the world have ramped up spending on the development of electric cars, hoping to catch up with pioneer Tesla TLSA.O. Porsche was forced by the regulator in May to recall nearly 60,000 Cayenne and Macan diesel cars because of illicit engine functions. "The diesel crisis caused us a lot of trouble", said Blume.

"Porsche is not demonising diesel".

"I think modern diesel engines are highly attractive and environmentally friendly", he said. "Still, Porsche's image has suffered".

"We have never developed and produced diesel engines ourselves".

Another reason for the no-diesel vow, he said, is that the company wants to return to its sporty roots. Earlier this year, reports that the automaker would end sales of diesel-powered vehicles surfaced, although company officials initially indicated that no final decision had been made. It has not had a diesel in its line up since February. In fact, the upcoming Porsche Taycan, which is set to make its debut in 2019, will be the carmaker's first fully-electric sports vehicle.

According to Bild am Sonntag, Porsche is suspected of manipulating engines to improve their sound on the road at the expense of higher emissions, adding this function was not active in a testing environment. "This was about nitrogen oxide, not CO2".

"That also means that there will be no more diesels from Porsche in the future".
