UK Labour hopes to paper over Brexit splits for united front

The motion sets out the sequencing towards a possible referendum: Labour will vote down May's deal if it fails the party's six tests on jobs and the economy; if the Parliament agrees and May still refuses to call a general election, then Labour could back a poll on the deal.

The motion, due to be voted on by delegates tomorrow, will state: 'If we can not get a general election, Labour must support all options remaining on the table, including campaigning for a public vote'.

Ever since the United Kingdom voted in 2016 to leave the EU, Labour has said it will respect the result - but it wants a closer relationship with the bloc than the one that Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative government is seeking.

Party members expected to vote in favour of such a measure on Tuesday, throwing up ideological and practical concerns for veteran socialist Corbyn.

The Labour leader said there would be a vote on Brexit at the Liverpool conference, but said it was not yet known exactly what question would be put to delegates.

However, the exact wording of the motion to be voted on by party members will only be confirmed tomorrow,
with more than 100 constituency submissions being compiled into a text for debate last night.

A crowd waving European Union and other flags chanted "bollocks to Brexit" and "it's not a done deal" as they walked from St George's Hall to a rally at Pier Head, close to where the conference is taking place.

He described the country as being at a tipping point and faced with a resurgence in the "radical right", adding: "This can not be a Labour Party that allows others to wreck our country and stand with the far right".

Britain's opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn gestures as he arrives with Labour Party's Executive Director of Strategy and Communications Seamas Milne (R) to give an interview to the BBC at the Museum of Liverpool on September 23, 2018, the official opening day of the annual Labour Party Conference.

Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, Mr Corbyn said: "What comes out of conference I will adhere to".

Their campaign is seen by many MPs on the right of the party as an effort to purge "Blairite" influences and critics of leader Jeremy Corbyn's handling of issues such as antisemitism.

"That is what happens when you return the party to the members".

"When it comes to opposing Brexit, members are clear - they want unequivocal support for a People's Vote, not some disappointing fudge by the leadership that simply leaves options on the table".

"The prime minister should report to parliament on what has happened...and then we should then measure her proposals for the relationship with the European Union against the six tests that the Labour party has put down". "I think our European partners are up for a deal".

Labour MP David Lammy described the motion as "farcical". "That's why I think we now need to take a stand - we the Labour Party and we the country".

He told BBC radio any second vote should not include an option to stay in the EU.

"And if there is a general election and we are in office we would go straight to the negotiating table".

Brexit is one of several challenges facing Corbyn, who heads a divided party.

Antisemitism was found to have the biggest impact among not only potential Labour voters, but also those who may vote for them in the future.
