Woman Arrested After Taking in Pets During Hurricane Florence

An animal rescuer in North Carolina was arrested after trying to help shelter animals after Hurricane Florence

According to a Facebook post from the Wayne County Government, Wayne County Animal Services visited the site on September 17 at the request of the North Carolina State Department of Agriculture. Getting pets the health care they need is just one of several logistical challenges for those taking in animals from North Carolina. Turbert shared a photo of a young pig, who he said "desperately needs medical attention", before revealing that his rescue team was unable to save the injured animal as farmers descended after the storm to return animals to their farms.

There were "abandoned cars where doors were flown open and you could tell people had just grabbed all of their belongings and had to go", said Savannah Dean.

Hedges said she gave amoxicillin to some sick animals and also used a topical antibiotic ointment.

"If we didn't feel like anything was being done wrong, we should not have taken (the animals)", Sauls said, according to The News-Argus.

"The owners got to evacuate". They got to save themselves.

Learch said for many of Lost Dog's volunteers, it's tempting to adopt every one of the animals they take in.

Hedges is considered innocent until proven guilty, the release said.

The animals were dropped off at her warehouse, but the facility was not registered as an official shelter.

Denise Milligan holds her grandson, 2-year-old Hunter, and two of her dogs above the water as she is escorted to dry ground at Lee's Landing Circle, Sept. 21, 2018 in Conway, S.C. With muddy river water still washing over entire communities on Friday, eight days after Hurricane Florence slammed into land with almost 3 feet of rain, new evacuation orders forced residents to flee to higher ground amid a sprawling disaster that's beginning to feel like it will never end.

She surrendered the animals.

During that visit, she was arrested on charges including 12 counts of practicing medicine without a veterinary license.

The nonprofit - which serves Wayne, Johnston, Lenoir and Wilson counties - now operates out of pet foster homes.
