Apple Acquires Shazam For $400 Million • Featured, Tech

Shazam Soon to be part of Apple Music

Apple Inc. has fully acquired music discovery app Shazam.

With Shazam as part of Apple's portfolio, Apple Music has further upped its competition with Spotify and other streaming challengers.

Shazam was founded in 1999 by Chris Barton, Philip Inghelbrecht, Avery Wang and Dhiraj Mukherjee.

Apple said last December that it was to buy London-based Shazam in a deal which reportedly valued the company at $400m (£300m).

"Shazam was one of the first apps available when we launched the App Store and has become a favorite app for music fans everywhere". Apple will reportedly make the app ad-free for all users soon - even with Android.

Shazam offers a high-tech solution to listeners' longtime agony over not recognizing music on the radio or in bars, letting users identify songs through their phones' microphones.

Apple hasn't said what how it plans to integrate Shazam into its services in the longer term, but the firm will presumably integrate Shazam - which helps people find the name of a song 20 million times a day closer with Apple Music and Siri in the future.

Shazam was one of the first app sensations in the era of the smartphone. Spotify has recently fallen behind its rival streaming service in monthly paid subscribers in the U.S., with 30 million subscribers as of February as opposed to Apple Music's 36 million.

Users of Apple's iPhone with the Shazam app installed can say: 'Hey Siri, what's that song?' and the app will identify it.
