New sexual-misconduct accusation rocks Kavanaugh nomination

Dozens of angry protesters were arrested at the Capitol Hill offices of multiple senators as opposition to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh grew

"The truth is I've never sexually assaulted anyone, in high school or otherwise", Kavanaugh said in an interview with Fox News with his wife sitting by his side, according to an excerpt released Monday afternoon.

The allegations, dating to the 1980s, have put in jeopardy Kavanaugh's chances of winning confirmation to the top US court in a Senate narrowly controlled by Trump's party, with high-stakes congressional elections just weeks away. He insisted he has a "lifelong record of promoting dignity and equality for women starting with the women who knew me when I was 14 years old".

"I am not questioning and have not questioned that perhaps Dr Ford at some point in her life was sexually assaulted by someone at some place, but what I know is I've never sexually assaulted anyone", Kavanaugh said.

Ford's lawyers said "various senators have been dismissive of her account and should have to shoulder their responsibility to ask her questions".

"I'm not going to let false accusations drive us out of this process", Kavanaugh said.

"The people who knew me then know that this did not happen, and have said so", the judge said in a statement.

"Many years after. I'll leave it at that", Mr Kavanaugh said. In an interview with the New Yorker published on Sunday, Ramirez said Kavanaugh had exposed himself to her at a party there in the early 1980s. She is accusing Kavanaugh of an incident while both were students at Yale University more than three decades ago.

Roche, who lived in a two-bedroom unit with Kavanaugh during their freshman year, described Ramirez as "being exceptionally honest, with a trusting manner", and said he believed Kavanaugh may have been "capable" of behaving in the alleged manner.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said on the Senate floor Monday afternoon that the allegations were a "smear campaign, pure and simple" that had been "aided and abetted by members of the United States Senate".

Trump's instinct since the Ford allegations first surfaced over a week ago has been to defend his Supreme Court pick and try to muscle his nomination through.

Grassley spokesman Taylor Foy accused Democrats of withholding information about allegations for political reasons but said the committee will "attempt to evaluate these new claims".

After a week of back and forth, in addition to political gamesmanship, Ford is scheduled to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday morning.

"I mean, I've said all along and Ashley, too, I want to be heard", Kavanaugh replied, cutting off his wife as she was about to speak.

"Judge Kavanaugh is an outstanding person".

"Given the multiple serious allegations against him, Kavanaugh can no longer credibly serve on the nation's highest court", the statement reads. Kavanaugh deinied the latest allegation.

"So if he doesn't get to be on the Supreme Court, maybe he'll be 'The Bachelor, '" Kimmel joked. "Time to make your actions match your words and show that you truly #BelieveWomen", tweeted Jody Drenzer Alperin from the protest in the Senate office buildings.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, called for the "immediate postponement" of any further action on Kavanaugh's nomination.

And since the standard that's being applied to Brett Kavanaugh - applied by the good NY senator herself, mind you - is that once an accusation is made, then guilt is affixed, shouldn't Gillibrand's seat be held by another about now?
