Brexit: Theresa May 'plotting another SNAP election' after disaster Salzburg summit

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May arrives for a family photo during the European Union leaders' informal summit in Salzburg, Austria on September 20, 2018.

The two sides are seeking to negotiate the terms of exit as well as an outline agreement on future co-operation, over the next month or so. "Without that, there are no gains from Brexit", he said.

Reflecting comments made since July by the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, and by national leaders who rebuffed May in person last week at a Salzburg summit, the document lays out the bloc's negotiators' thinking on the Chequers plan, which also faces stiff opposition within May's own Conservative Party.

Former Brexit Secretary David Davis, who has indicated he will vote against the plans, said recently the ERG had about 30 to 40 members, with a core group of about a dozen.

'We're now, bluntly, in a cul-de-sac, I'm afraid Salzburg was all too predictable, ' he said.

The Prime Minister will chair a meeting of the Cabinet in Downing Street on Monday amid intense pressure to change course and seek a simpler, less ambitious deal.

But under its current demands the European Union will not accept a Canada plus trade deal which covers Northern Ireland because of complexities with the land border with Ireland.

"The FTA would only apply to the Great Britain-EU relationship, with Northern Ireland effectively remaining in parts of the single market and customs union", he said.

It's a deal which retains the union of the United Kingdom, our constitutional integrity, it's a deal which provides for no hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, protects jobs and enables us to have a good trade relationship with Europe and the rest of the world.

May said her plan was the only viable one on the table and that she remained confident of securing a deal, it said in a statement.

After talking with her cabinet, the PM then met with European Parliament Brexit co-ordinator Guy Verhofstadt for what the Belgian politician described as an "open and honest exchange" on the progress of negotiations.

A Downing Street spokesperson said: "It is categorically untrue that Number 10 is planning a snap election".

She will go on to say she has a plan for an economy that is knowledge-rich, highly-innovative, highly-skilled and high quality but with low tax and smart regulation.
