Indonesian soccer league suspended

Haringga, 23, was beaten to death by a mob near Bandung's Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium shortly before the match on Sunday.

Indonesia's Minister of Sport, Imam Nahrawi announced that the nation's top flight football league has been suspended for two weeks following the death of a fan at a match between rival teams.

The chairman of the Indonesian Soccer Association, Edy Rahmayadi, said late Tuesday the suspension will last until the completion of an investigation into the death of Haringga Sirila, a supporter of Jakarta-based club Persija.

The PSSI added that it would also consult Fifa, world football's governing body, and the Asian Football Confederation, partly as a way of avoiding sanctions.

Indonesian football has been beset by problems in recent years, including poor management, corruption allegations and foreign players dying after going unpaid and being unable to afford medical care.

Police say some sixteen people had since been arrested in connection with the attack, which was the seventh death of a fan linked to a match between the two clubs since 2012, according to football analyst Akmal Marhali.

In July Indonesian fans hurled stones and bottles at the visiting Malaysia team after the home side lost their semi-final match in the AFF Cup Under-19 football match.

Federation Internationale de Football Association banned Indonesia from worldwide competition in 2014 following a row with the Indonesian FA but it was lifted two years later. The ban was lifted a year ago.

In the wake of Haringga's death, football analyst Akmal Marhali urged the PSSI to punish clubs who can not control hooliganism by their fans.

"PSSI has promised it would take firm action (in the past), but nothing happened", he said.
