Why doctors want you to get your flu shot this month

Despite the fact that 70 per cent of Brits surveyed had experienced flu, 53 per cent said they have no intention of getting the flu jab this year and a further 10 per cent said they didn't know. "To better serve students, especially when we're talking about the flu season, we're going to fill up those [appointment] slots as much as possible".

Uptake rates among healthcare workers in the acute hospital sector reached nearly 45% past year, compared to 34% during the previous flu season. Those predictions can be wrong, of course, but even when they are right vaccines can be mismatched to circulating viruses.

"So I hope it's just on the top of people's mind that, as it gets to this time of year, people will just automatically think about it's time for me to get my flu vaccine", he said.

Traditional flu vaccines, or "trivalent vaccines", protect against three strains of influenza.

"While the mist would be an option, the shot is still the recommendation", he said.

Influenza is a viral respiratory infection and most deaths are caused by the resulting complications rather than the virus itself.

The HSE is reminding people that "if you can't get the flu, you can't spread it".

After a deadly 2017-2018 flu season, doctors want you to be armed with facts about the illness.

If you get the flu, the Health Department says stay home from work or school until you are free of fever for 24-hours.

Can you get sick from the flu shot?

Many physicians and employers offer free flu shots, and a number of national retail chains are also offering the 2018 flu vaccine for free.

Vance said this year's flu shot is a "quadrivalent" vaccine engineered to fight two strands of A-type influenza and two of the B-types predicted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to Frank Esper, M.D., an infectious disease specialist at Cleveland Clinic Children's, while improvements made to the nasal vaccine have made it more effective, the flu shot is still the preferred way to go. "So it's not necessarily a bad thing that you might feel that way". Particularly, individuals who have egg allergies or have ever suffered from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (a severe paralyzing illness, also called GBS) should talk to a doctor before getting a vaccine. Those who are pregnant could become very ill if they get flu, which could also be bad for their baby.

If you're severely allergic to the flu shot or any of its components, you should not get vaccinated, the CDC says.

The GP group said people should speak to their GP practice about how to access the vaccine there.

If you've previously caught the flu after having the jab, chances are you had already caught it at the time of having the vaccine or in the following weeks after having it (as its protective effects don't kick in properly until two weeks later).
