For years, a priceless meteorite has been a doorstop at a barn on the west side of MI, but now, the man who held onto it for 30 years has chose to show it off.
The man, who hasn't been named, bought a farm in Michigan in 1988 and on purchasing it noticed a large rock holding the door open, according to an article published by Central Michigan University.
"For 18 years, the answer has been categorically "no" - meteor wrongs, not meteorites", she said. She analyzed the meteorite and observed it was about was 88 percent iron and 12 percent nickel.
The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., corroborated Sirbescu's analysis that the 22-pound "rock" is, indeed, a meteorite, and is apparently the sixth-largest of its type to be discovered in MI.
"It's the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically", Sibescu expressed. She sent two small slices to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., to validate her findings. He says the farmer who sold him the property told him it landed in his backyard in the 1930s. The then owner told the man it was part of the property, and he could keep it.
The farmer said that it had come down onto the property in the '30s - "and it made a heck of a noise when it hit", the new owner recalled him saying, according to CMU's statement. The farmer and his father recovered it in the morning, digging it free - it was reportedly still warm to the touch when retrieved.
David says his kids took the space rock to "show and tell" at school.
This year, the man was inspired by stories of MI residents finding and selling pieces of meteorites.
The meteorite hasn't sold yet, but the Smithsonian Museum is considering buying it, as well as another collector.
The retiree's old rock turned out to be a nest egg that could be worth $100,000, or possibly even more.
"I said, 'Wait a minute".
But he's not hoarding the payday, because 10% of the rock's value is already pledged to CMU's earth and atmospheric science students. And now a man in Grand Rapids just found out the meteorite he has from that impact is worth at least $100,000.
