Scientists first managed to remove the "second Month" outside the Solar system

NASA Kepler exomoon

"This would be the first case of moon detection outside our solar system", says David Kipping.

From Earth it is separated by 8 thousand light years.

According to the researchers from the Columbia University in the U.S., such enormous moons do not exist in our own solar system, where almost 200 natural satellites have been catalogued.

This transit method can tell astronomers quite a bit about the planets orbiting a given star, but it's much trickier to spot moons orbiting those planets.

According to the journal Science Advances, researchers analyzed data from 284 exoplanets discovered using the Kepler satellite, and found "an anomaly" Kepler object 1625b.

The observations measured the momentary dimming of starlight as a planet passed in front of its star, called a transit. But only one of them, Kepler 1625b, demonstrated the kind of properties that they were searching for-a couple of unforeseen variations from the norm.

"We saw little deviations and wobbles in the light curve that caught our attention."
More observations were needed before they could draw any conclusions, but the evidence scored them 40 hours of observation time with the Hubble telescope.

They were looking for changes to the planet's brightness. "They said that they have noticed a decline in the amount of light after about 3 and a half hours after by the star held a planet the size of Jupiter", - stated in the message.

"Unfortunately, the scheduled Hubble observations ended before the complete transit of the moon could be measured."

With the data from Kepler and Hubble, Kipping and Teachey found compelling evidence of an exomoon. This suggests that something is tugging on the planet, possibly a moon. Our moon does the same to Earth.

The moon is estimated to be only 1.5 per cent the mass of its companion planet. This value is close to the mass-ratio between the Earth and its moon. Such gargantuan moons do not exist in our own solar system, where almost 200 natural satellites have been catalogued.

Kepler 1625b and its satellite, however, are gaseous, not rocky, and, therefore, such a collision may not lead to the condensation of a satellite.

During a survey of 300 Kepler exoplanets past year, Teachey and Kipping noticed a gas giant, Kepler-1625d, showing some peculiar characteristics. "If indeed the satellite is comparable in size to Neptune, it may challenge leading planet formation theories as the system appears to somewhat resemble a 'double planet'".
