Daniil Medvedev shocks home favourite Kei Nishikori in Tokyo final

If he wins the Tokyo title, it will be the second time this year that he will take a title as a qualifier, as he did in Sydney Australia in January.

The 6-2, 6-4 defeat in front of a stunned home crowd at Musashino Forest Sports Plaza came after the third-seeded Nishikori had reached the tournament decider without dropping a set.

Nishikori corrected issues with his own serve in the second set but still could not have an impact on Medvedev's service games, winning only one point on the Russian's serve during the entirety of the second set.

Faulting at 15-40, Nishikori put his second serve in play but mishit his first groundstroke of the subsequent rally, sending an attempted forehand victor high into the air and out.

Nishikori, who has not won an ATP World Tour title since Memphis in 2016, will face Daniil Medvedev in Sunday's final.

Medvedev opened the second set in imposing fashion, denying Nishikori a single return in play for another love service game and a 1-0 lead. "I've got to keep playing the same in Shanghai".

Canada's Denis Shapovalov was ousted from the Japan Open on Saturday with a semifinal loss to Daniil Medvedev, holding off the teenager's latest attempt to make his first tour-level final.

The Frenchman survived two break points in his following service game, fighting back from 15-40 with four straight points to level the set at 4-4.

Chasing a first tournament victory after recovering from a lengthy wrist injury, the world number 12 never really threatened Medvedev's serve and went out in a flurry of unforced errors. Nishikori brought up two match points on a crosscourt forehand before sealing the victory with a forehand victor to an ovation from the home crowd.

In men's doubles event, the German-Japanese duo of Jan-Lennard Struff and Ben McLachlan thrashed Michael Venus (New Zealand) and Raven Klaasen (South Africa) 6-4, 7-5 to lift the title.
