Australia rejects calls to phase out coal-fired power

Australia rejects calls to phase out coal-fired power

Limiting global warming to the lower figure of 1.5 degrees Celsius will require rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes, said IPCC Chairman Hoesung Lee.

According to the Department of the Environment and Energy, black and brown coal generated about 62 per cent of Australia's electricity in 2016-17. Its prognosis for the planet is grim: We may have as little as 12 years to act on climate change - to slash global emissions 45 percent - to reach this target.

Chapter 3, Impacts of 1.5˚C Global Warming on Natural and Human Systems, offers a somber note on the future of glaciers, reflecting the slowness with which glaciers respond to climate drivers.

The report was commissioned by the United Nations to see what would happen if global average temperatures rose by 1.5°C above preindustrial levels, and what it would take to cap warming at that level.

She then said the call to phase out coal power by 2050 was "drawing a very long bow", casting doubt on the expertise of the world's leading climate scientists. Rain-fed agriculture is already marginal across much of the country, and anticipated climate change may well make current agricultural practices unviable at 1.5℃ and above. Any additional emissions will require removing Carbon dioxide from the air.

According to the most recent federal climate assessment for the region, as winter temperatures continue increasing, less snow will fall, "potentially disrupting western USA water management practices".

"Findings issued today by the world's preeminent climate scientists urgently underscore the need to dramatically step up global action against climate change", Bob Perciasepe, president of the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, said in a statement. "We will have to change our behaviour". This move would spell certain disaster as the U.S. is the world's second-largest greenhouse gas emitter, behind China. This comes after an increase of 1°C above pre-industrial levels since the mid-1800s. They say it excludes scientists who downplay the effect of burning fossil fuels.

However, the IPCC report's authors said the world would face severe consequences if the great bulk of fossil fuels including coal, oil and gas, weren't left in the ground.

"But it has not been very easy to get support for carbon taxation and things like that because it is asking people in counties like ours to pay now for the benefit of those 50 years in the future as well as other parts of the world".

"Our economy depends on the coal industry, and we can have both a strong coal industry and reduce carbon emissions".

The landmark report released Monday said that time is running out to avert climate-induced disaster. It's generally regarded as the vanguard of climate science.

The Labor party has capitalised on the IPCC report and used it to demonstrate the their view that the Coalition isn't unified on its' approach to climate change and that more conservative elements of the party are undermining the Government's ability to put forward sensible policy in regards to emissions reduction.
