Catastrophic climate effects could hit by 2040, United Nations report says

The election of Donald Trump-who pledged to pull the US out of the Paris Climate accord and aims to roll back transportation and power-plant emissions standards-has galvanized investors, building support for funds focused on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, as Barron's reported.

In a statement on the IPCC Climate Change report, issued Monday, Gore insisted that the United Nations's climate scientists have made their final proclamation on the subject of global warming - and the news is dire.

"Every extra bit of warming matters, especially since warming of 1.5º C or higher increases the risk associated with long-lasting or irreversible changes", said Hans-Otto Pörtner, co-chair of IPCC Working Group II. By the year 2030, global human-caused emissions of Carbon dioxide would need to fall by roughly 45 percent relative to 2010 levels.

But no matter how many warnings we receive - and let's be honest, at this point we have had far too many - no one is willing to put their foot down and pump the brakes. He says there is still time for people to change their behavior to stop an increase in greenhouse gas releases.

The IPCC report is undeniably grim, but its authors state that the 1.5°C target can still be met if unprecedented, wide-ranging action is taken straight away. The likelihood of an Arctic Ocean free of sea ice in summer would be once per century with global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared with at least once per decade with 2 degrees Celsius. "You know, which group drew it".

Key points in the report include maintaining the current global temperature at 1.5ºC.

"While the pace of change that would be required to limit warming to 1.5°C can be found in the past, there is no historical precedent for the scale of the necessary transitions, in particular in a socially and economically sustainable way", the report continues. The planet is already experiencing the effects of global warming.

The special report on global warming by a United Nations body has set the tone for the upcoming climate conference in Poland where countries will now have to make efforts to align their pledges with the 1.5-degree celsius goal - a more stringent target than the existing agreement to limit average temperature rise within 2 degree celsius by 2100.

"This report gives policymakers and practitioners the information they need to make decisions that tackle climate change while considering local context and people's needs", she said.

"This is one of the most important reports ever produced by the IPCC, and certainly one of the most needed", Hoesung Lee, the chair of the body, said at a press conference in South Korea on Monday. While he observed that numerous questions might have been better put to Nordhaus, he gave a formidable performance, demonstrating how the issues of climate change are not far from his main focus either.

Climate change is a global challenge demanding global solutions. And the idea may become increasingly relevant as world leaders prepare to meet in Poland this December, where they will finalize the Paris Agreement's rulebook-a set of guidelines for how individual nations should outline their climate action plans and report their progress. A recent report by NDEVR Environmental predicts that Australia will miss its Paris emissions reductions targets by around one billion tonnes of carbon dioxide.

That could reduce flooding and give the people that inhabit the world's coasts, islands and river deltas time to adapt to climate change. The IPCC report makes it clear that the time for talking is over - this is literally a matter of life and death. It has a scientific robustness that shows 1.5°C is not just a political concession.
