Advice from Wicklow County Council as the country prepares for Storm Callum

However, she stressed that the weather system was still developing and it will be today before there is more certainty of what will happen.

"The first swathe of storm force winds will reach southern coastal counties between 23:00 tonight and 01:00 on Friday morning", said Mr Nolan.

"These winds will then transfer rather rapidly across the country, with coastal counties seeing winds up to 130km/h".

At the moment, it's looking like Callum's strongest winds will stay offshore.

In wet weather drivers are urged to slow down if the rain and spray from vehicles is making it hard to see and be seen and remember that stopping distances will be at least double in wet weather, keep well back from the vehicle in front, and ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually if the steering becomes unresponsive.

The winds will be at their strongest overnight gusting between 110 and 130 km/h on the coasts.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Joanna Donnelly of Met Éireann said winds would be strongest in coastal areas.

Although the strongest winds are likely in western Ireland, North Western parts of the United Kingdom can also expect severe gales.

Before all that happens Thursday will be a day of heavy rain in many places.

"We are going to get very high winds followed by a lot of rain and there could be some coastal surge".

There is now a yellow warning for wind in place for Northern Ireland. "Highest temperatures of 14 to 16 degrees".

The third storm of the 18/19 season is set to bring heavy downpours and strong gales to the country, with yellow weather warnings now in place in some areas.

The weather has already caused misery this week for Scots, with strong winds and rain causing disruption to the transport network.

Winds of up to 60 miles per hour are expected to hit the area, which combined with high tides could lead to some coastal impact due to large waves.

Motorists in Louth are being urged by AA Ireland, to adapt their driving in the coming days and to be on the lookout for vulnerable road users, as high winds are expected to hit Ireland from Thursday night through to Saturday.
