It looks like Meltan can only be caught in Pokemon Go

The Pokemon Company has just released a new video showcasing in-universe findings of Pokemon Professors Oak and Willow, who have both been closely studying this new Mythical Pokemon. If you own one of the Let's Go games, you can transfer any Generation 1 Pokemon (#1-151) from Pokemon Go to the Switch games, which is how you'll receive the Mystery Box.

"Meltan will begin to appear once a Mystery Box is opened in Pokemon Go, but be careful-they'll only appear for the player that opened the Mystery Box", The Pokemon Company says on its website. Today, The Pokemon Company is offering significantly more details, including how to catch Meltan. It's a unusual new addition to the Kanto region, but one that feels right at home in the wider world of Pokémon.

Opening the Mystery Box in Pokemon Go will then allow Meltan to appear for real in the game - not those Ditto-like appearances from earlier - and then players can catch it to fill out your Pokemon Go Pokedex.

The two keys to capturing this Mythical Pokemon are a new item, the Mystery Box, and Nintendo Switch games Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu and Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee.

You can try to deduce some more from the official Pokemon Let's Go website. Subsequent transfers will get more standard rewards like Pokemon Candy, but the first time you transfer the Mystery Box is your in-game reward.

The Go Park isn't only good for bringing your favorite monsters over from Pokemon Go; if you transfer 25 of the same species, you'll be able to play a minigame in an area of the Go Park called the Play Yard.

Back in September, a Pokemon Go network traffic leak indicated that an entirely new, never-before-seen Pokemon was coming to Niantic's mobile game. "Look forward to this new Special Research this winter, when you can participate in various investigations with Professor Willow and catch Meltan!"
