Mohammed Dewji: Africa's 'youngest billionaire' abducted in Tanzania

According Dar es Salaam police boss Lazurus Mambosasa, Mr. Dewji was abducted by two people who were foreigners at Oyster Bay in Dar es Salaam, while on his way to Colosseum Gym.

The businessman and former politician was reportedly pursued by numerous armed individuals as he made his way into a Dar Es Salaam hotel.

A taxi driver nearby said when Mr Dewji appeared, the vehicle parked inside flashed lights before the two white men alighted and seized him.

The motive for the kidnapping is still unknown, although police expect this to be a "ransom" kidnapping.

Mohammed Dewji, 43, who heads the MeTL Group which operates in about 10 countries with interests in agriculture to insurance, transport, logistics and the food industry, was snatched as he entered the gym of a hotel in the city.

Dewji was born in Tanzania and studied at Georgetown University in the United States. He served as an MP from 2005 to 2015.

Mr Dewji is also a major sponsor of one of Tanzania's biggest football teams, Simba.

Mohammed Dewji, 40, Tanzania's richest man according to Forbes magazine is the CEO of the MeTL Group of Companies.

"They fired a gun and then they opened the gate", Makonda said, adding that security personnel had started a search for Dewji.

The driver said the kidnappers shot in the air once to scare people away before whisking away Dewji to a waiting auto which sped towards Masaki.

An Uber driver nearby said when Mr Dewji appeared, the auto parked inside flashed lights before the two white men alighted from their vehicle and went straight to where Dewji was.
