Rocket Headed for International Space Station Aborts After Launcher Failure

In August, the International Space Station crew spotted a hole in a Russian Soyuz capsule docked to the orbiting outpost that caused a brief loss of air pressure before being patched.

Rockets use boosters to provide the thrust they need to launch from Earth and breech the atmosphere.

The live feed was closely monitored by scientists at Roscosmos and NASA, where people were seen glued to the screens, hoping for the best.

Booster rockets carrying a Soyuz spacecraft with a Russian and a U.S. astronaut on board headed for the International Space Station failed mid-air on Thursday, forcing the crew to make an emergency landing. The duo blasted off from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard the Russian Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft. "Central time", Dean reported. Hague and Ovchinin are out of the capsule and reported to be in good condition. Russian Federation stands to lose that monopoly in the coming years with the arrival of SpaceX's Dragon v2 and Boeing's Starliner crew capsules.

Video footage from the launch at the Baikonur Cosmodrome shows a large plume of smoke coming from the rocket at the moment it failed and footage from inside the capsule shows the two astronauts being violently shaken about. However, until the problem with this launch is found and solved, no Soyuz spacecraft is likely to be launched.

The ISS, launched in 1998, is a habitable artificial satellite in low Earth orbit which is used to carry out scientific and space-related tests. Last year, NASA astronaut Jack Fischer and Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin shared a ride to ISS. "Telemetry is being studied".

"Rescue services have been working since the first second of the accident", Rogozin wrote on Twitter.

Soyuz T-10a was the second abort and occurred in 1983. "The crew's safety systems worked". The Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft has made an emergency landing.

This story will be updated as more information is released.

Hague and Ovchinin would have joined Expedition 57 Commander Alexander Gerst, NASA Flight Engineer Serena Aunon-Chancellor and Roscosmos Flight Engineer Sergey Prokopyev at the space station. While at Washburn, he was the managing editor of the student run newspaper, the Washburn Review.

A Soyuz failure could jeopardize continued operation of the International Space Station.

The rocket lifted off at 4:40 a.m. The mission would have been Hague's first space flight.
