Tsunami threat cancelled after 7.0-magnitude quake hits Papua New Guinea

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre reported that waves of less than 0.3 metres could be witnessed along Papua New Guinea's coastline and the neighbouring Solomon Islands.

He reported there was no damage in the town, but noted officers had not yet been able to access villages closer to the epicentre.

A Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin.

New Zealand's Civil Defence said there was no significant tsunami risk to the country.

Central Sulawesi was devastated when hit by a 7.5 magnitude quake last month which killed nearly 2000 people with hundreds more still missing.

"Based on the preliminary natural disaster parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 186 miles of the quake epicenter", the PTWC said.

Tourists and locals said they were woken by the magnitude-6 quake, the latest in a series to strike the country.

Papua New Guinea is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most seismically active region in the world, where 90 percent of the world's earthquakes occur.

Also on Thursday, a magnitude-6.0 quake struck just off the popular island of Bali, Indonesia, where the International Monetary Fund and its sister lending organisation, the World Bank, were holding annual meetings until Sunday.

Indonesian authorities said at least three people were killed and four injured in the quake. Officials say more than 80,000 people are living in temporary shelters or otherwise displaced.
