WhatsApp fixes booby-trap video call bug

Natalie Silvanovich, a researcher in Google's Project Zero security research team and a Tamagotchi hacker first spotted the WhatsApp vulnerability.

A critical vulnerability in the WhatsApp messaging app for Android and iOS was fixed today that could have been activated simply by a user answering a call.

The move has been making the rounds ever since Facebook acquired WhatsApp, the report added.

Silvanovich reported the vulnerability to WhatsApp at the end of August this year.

According to Silvanovich's report, the bug is triggered when a user receives a malformed RTP packet, triggering the corruption error and crashing the application.

It is worth mentioning that just the WhatsApp app on Android and iOS were affected because they use the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) for video calls.

This exploit was fixed on September 28 for the Android users and on October 3 for the iPhone users via an update. The WhatsApp for Web client was unaffected since it uses WebRTC for video conferencing.

Not just in the messenger app, but also while interacting with unknown persons on email, as well.

"We routinely engage with security researchers from around the world to ensure WhatsApp remains safe and reliable". This puts them at risk. It does, however, suggest that users will want to be extra-vigilant, both in locking down their account info and refusing to accept calls from strangers. He or she will obviously enter the wrong security one-time code because that code is sent to the actual user's phone number. After several wrong SMS attempts, WhatsApp will show a message to user to go for voice verification.
