Apple TV Owners Might Get Apple's Incoming Original Content For Free

Well, that's one way to differentiate yourself in the crowded streaming video market.

The new streaming platform will also offer "subscription services from legacy media companies" that users may already be paying for, so customers won't need to log into multiple apps to access films and TV from other networks like HBO and Starz.

While Apple's slate of first-party shows has been a poorly kept secret, the exact method the company is planning on using to distribute that content has remained unclear. Free content in Apple's "TV" appApple has previously offered some of its video content for free through Apple Music but it appears that the company will be transitioning to the ‘TV app, which is now curating content from multiple services such as Amazon, HBO, iTunes, and others.

Giving original content away for free to Apple device owners is a clever strategy as it could lure Android users to its ecosystem, resulting in additional device and app sales. Now the app allows users to easily access the entire library of streaming content available to them across the various apps on their Apple TV, iPad and iPod. Think "Game of Thrones", but without the sex and violence.”. The company expects to launch a new and improved version of the TV app "early next year", the report notes.

Indeed, it was previously reported that this was happening, as Apple replaced the showrunner on Steven Spielberg's revamped Amazing Stories when the show got "too dark" and has also retooled the upcoming series from Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. By creating a library of entirely family friendly content, Apple can stand apart from Netflix as something different.

In the meantime, music encyclopedia service Genius today announced a deal with Apple that will allow Apple Music subscribers to play full songs from Genius' song page. Owners of Apple devices, such as the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV will find the still-in-the-works service in the pre-installed "TV" application, said the people, who asked not to be named because the details of the project are private. Hold on to your butts.
