Ben Affleck Signs For New Movie With Gavin O'Connor

Suicide Squad Warner Bros

Whether or not Gunn pens the script and directs the film, the new deal with Warner Bros.is Gunn's first project since leaving Disney/Marvel Studio.

The first film was critiqued heavily by critics and audience members alike, scoring a measly 28% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Guardians of the Galaxy cast came to Gunn's support, but apparently to no avail.

Suicide Squad, written and directed by David Ayer, featured an ensemble cast of Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Scott Eastwood, and Cara Delevingne.

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a unsafe black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences.

Poaching Gunn for Suicide Squad is a bit of a coup for Warner Bros., especially considering the first Suicide Squad was godawful, and Guardians of the Galaxy is a delight.

Ayer denied studio interference, insisting re-shoots were intended only to add even more action.

'What are we, some kinda suicide squad reboot?' Formally announced projects like Flashpoint, Green Lantern Corps, a Harley Quinn/Joker romance and a Cyborg solo film have been thrown into limbo as well. Our first-blush thought is a one-word "duh", as Gunn's propensity for dark, profane humor and redemption seems like a flawless fit for DC Comics' most blatant anti-hero collection of bad-guys-gone-good.

Stay tuned for details about Gunn's potential Suicide Squad film. Disney quickly dropped Gunn from the planned sequel, though it appears his script may yet be used when a new director is named.

There's still no release date set for Suicide Squad 2, but Warner Bros. now has 5th June, 2020 reserved for an unnamed DC movie.

Marvel and Disney's reputation is a little too clean-cut to make room for James Gunn's dark past.

Most intriguing is how From the Ashes was essentially a relaunch of the Suicide Squad comic franchise within DC Comics.
