Kanye West "is not Picasso", Leonard Cohen once wrote

Leonard Cohen aimed his proverbial pen at Kanye West as he crafted a collection of poems in the final months of his life.

Yesterday, amid the circus that was Kanye West's visit to meet Donald Trump in the Oval Office, a new poem by Leonard Cohen re-surfaced, shared on social media by Americana star Amanda Shires, that went viral and delighted his many detractors.

The work has been unearthed as part of a posthumous book, The Flame, which collects Cohen's poetry and lyrics written prior to his death in 2016.

West's Grammy-nominated album from 2016 is also called "The Life of Pablo".

"I am Picasso!" West declared during a 2013 concert, adding for good measure: "I am Michelangelo!" "I am Edison/ I am Tesla". "Kanye West is not Edison". Read Cohen's full ode to "bullshit culture" below. Cohen talked about West in a 2014 interview with the Wall Street Journal and appeared to harbor no ill will toward the rapper saying, "A lot of, say Jay-Z or Kanye West - you don't have to identify with every position they take, especially if you're white". It's the energy, it's the resonance of truth, of person, of real experience. He also seems to throw some shade at JAY-Z, writing, "Jay-Z is not the Dylan of anything / I am the Dylan of anything". And the late singer and songwriter scrawls that he "only come [s] alive after a war". "Cohen once told the New Yorker magazine that Dylan told him, "'As far as I'm concerned, Leonard, you're Number 1.
