Learn More About Mental Health Awareness in Teens with NAMI Sarasota

One in six people every week experience a common mental health problem like anxiety or depression

After working in the industry as a nurse for many years, I changed my focus, and took these basic skills with me to the Behavioral Health Division.

Globally, "depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents" with suicide being the third leading cause of death in 15 to 19-year-olds, noted the WHO.

"The public, emergency physicians and mental health professionals all agree that emergency departments are inappropriate venues for mentally ill and distressed people. What can we do?" which is a click-worthy headline to be sure, but also a thought provoking one.

"Within families and communities, we often remain silenced by a shame that tells us that those with mental illness are somehow less worthy or at fault for their own suffering", the two activists said.

Exactly a year after the start of the arbitration hearings that sought justice for the families of the dead Life Esidimeni patients, the esteemed The Lancet medical journal has released a global mental health report condemning the local disaster as "tragic". "The challenges are to help people understand that it is an illness and there are medicines and treatment available". And yeah, a lot of the time it (thankfully) is, but a lot of the time it's not.

The person who can't afford to dish out 70 quid every week for an hour long session isn't ready to talk.

"We can help them to make sense of what's making them anxious, because they don't always see what that is".

Wade said having World Mental Health Day is important to let people who struggle with mental illness know they have options for help. It's not easy, but the impact you will have on others is a priceless reward. It offloads, it releases, it provides a space for the intense feelings of stress and panic that can overwhelm and debilitate.

Kufre gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja to commemorate the World Mental Health Day. She founded the Born This Way Foundation in 2012 to help young people address mental wellness, and she herself has been open about surviving a sexual assault by a record producer when she was 19 years old.

And of course they will.

It's also entirely possible to feel angry, passionate, and empathetic for others without blasting it all over social media.

She continues, "We teach teens how to recognize signs and symptoms of mental illness and how get help. and how we need to reduce stigma of mental illness. We invite all staff and family members to participate in the many activities created to promote greater understanding of ways we can support ourselves and each other in this important area".

Let's not entirely discount it though.
