Man planned to bomb National Mall on Election Day

New Yorker arrested for building bomb to blow himself up in DC on Election Day

A NY state man built a 200-pound bomb in his basement and planned to detonate it in Washington on Election Day, according to federal authorities who arrested him.

Rosenfeld allegedly told agents during an interview that he had purchased large amounts of the explosive substance, black powder, online, which he picked up and transported from New Jersey to his home in NY, the release said.

His stated reason for these acts was to draw attention to his political belief in "sortition", a political theory that advocates the random selection of government officials.

A Tappan man is charged with manufacturing an explosive device in his Rockland County home and then planning to detonate it in Washington, D.C.to kill himself and draw attention to his radical political beliefs.

He bought large quantities black powder over the internet to build a large bomb in his basement, authorities said.

Armed with a search warrant, agents conducted a search of Rosenfeld's home on October 9 and found a functional explosive device weighing some 200 pounds.

Federal agents first learned of the plot after Rosenfeld described his plans in letters and text messages he sent to an unidentified person in Pennsylvania between August and September, the complaint said.

According to charging documents, Rosenfeld's plan to detonate the bomb in Washington.

'There is no danger to the public, ' the Rockland County town supervisor said in a statement.

Along with the 200-pound explosive, "law enforcement agents also found, among other things, a fusing system for triggering explosive devices and what appeared to be empty canisters of black powder", according to officials.

Paul Rosenfeld, 56, of Tappan, was charged Wednesday with unlawfully manufacturing a destructive device and one count of bringing explosives across state lines.

Agents said they think Rosenfeld was acting alone in the alleged plot. 'Fortunately, his plans were thwarted by the quick action of a concerned citizen and the diligent work of a host of our law enforcement partners and the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force'.

Rosenfeld made his first appearance in NY federal court earlier Wednesday.
