Police race BBC news presenters to back-up studio after IT glitch

Fiona Bruce and Mark Easton More

Fiona Bruce flagged down a passing police vehicle to get her to another studio to present the News At Six after a technical glitch caused havoc at BBC Broadcasting House. Traffic awful. Aagghhh!' Mr Easton wrote on Twitter at 5.20pm alongside a picture taken inside the vehicle.

News bosses were even forced to repeat a news bulletin from earlier in the day, in order to bridge the gap while the problem was solved.

But it appears the traffic was due to a demonstration and the pair ended up being escorted through in a police vehicle.

'Policeman Josh has saved the day!

In a rush to make it to Millbank the pair accidentally stumbled into the middle of a protest - grinding the traffic to a halt.

The difficulties started shortly after 3pm on Wednesday and the news presenter Ben Brown appeared with the word "Recorded" written at the top left of the screen.

From about 15:00 BST, the BBC News Channel and BBC World News were unable to broadcast live, relying instead on recorded material.

The BBC had to run previously recorded content on its live news channel due to the technical issue.

'We're working hard to resolve this as quickly as possible.

'However, the live programming had returned in time for the 4 o'clock headlines'.
