Promoter of Disastrous Fyre Music Festival Sentenced to Six Years in Prison

Billy McFarland of Fyre Festival Sentenced to Six Years in Prison

Billy McFarland, the organizer behind last year's disastrous Fyre Festival in the Bahamas, has been sentenced to six years in prison for fraud charges.

The Fyre Festival founder could have served up to 20 years for convictions on three counts of wire fraud, one count of bank fraud, and one count of lying to investigators.

The New York Times reports that investigators concluded that the 26-year-old "had defrauded investors in his company, Fyre Media, as well as a subsidiary that had promoted the music festival, resulting in $24 million in losses".

Back in March, McFarland pled guilty to two counts of fraud in a scheme that bilked investors and would-be purchasers of tickets to the Fyre Festival, out of millions.

McFarland and co-promoter Ja Rule chose to scrap the event, which resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars worth of lawsuits, against both Billy McFarland, Ja Rule, and The Fyre Festival.

"The remorse I feel is crushing".

Fyre Festival took place in April previous year, billed as "the culture experience of the decade".

Though McFarland's legal team tried to piece together a mental health defense, prosecutors called him "the consummate con artist" during sentencing. In June he was arrested for another ticket scam: NYC VIP Access, where he sold people $150,000 worth of fake tickets to events, like the Met Gala and the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. He's seen at an earlier court appearance.

It's not the end of McFarland's legal woes: there are a number of class action lawsuits against himself and Fyre Media that are now waiting to be heard.
