Soyuz Space Vehicle Designed to Safely Return Crew in Any Conditions - ASI

Currently, the Russian's Soyuz rocket is the only system in the world that can carry human crew members up to the ISS, and return them safely home afterward. As rescue crews arrived, Hague and Ovchinin were reported in "good condition" and found out of the capsule.

A Russian rocket carrying an American and a Russian to the International Space Station failed on launch Thursday, forcing the astronaut and cosmonaut to careen back to Earth in a dramatic emergency landing.

The pair had taken off as scheduled at 2:40 p.m. local time (4:40 a.m. ET) Thursday from the Russia-leased Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan atop a Soyuz booster rocket.

NASA and Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, pledged a thorough investigation after the aborted launch of a Russian Soyuz rocket.

The rocket was transporting Hague and Ovchinin from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan for a six-month stay on the International Space Station.

Earlier NASA warned the Soyuz capsule was returning to Earth "via a ballistic descent, which is a sharper angle of landing compared to normal".

The capsule landed about 20km (12 miles) east of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan.

In 2008, Expedition 16 crew experienced a similar steep ballistic descent on return from the ISS as did cosmonauts returning from the Salyut space station in 1979.

Russian Federation was forming a state commission to investigate the Soyuz launch incident, Nasa said.

The hole was detected in August and quickly sealed up, but Russian newspapers said Roscosmos was probing the possibility that USA crewmates had sabotaged the space station to get a sick colleague sent back home. Additionally, including today, there have been three total failed launches of a crewed Soyuz vehicle - Soyuz 18-1 in 1975, Soyuz T-10-1 in 1983 and the Soyuz MS-10 launch this morning. Roscosmos, the Russian firm that operates the nation's space agency and is responsible for Soyuz launches, will not hold any news conferences today.

Hague and Ovchinin would have joined the station's current crew, which includes American astronaut Serena Aunon-Chancellor.

Russian Federation is now the only country taking crew to and from the ISS. -Russian cooperation in space. Soviet cosmonauts Vladimir Titov and Gennady Strekalov jettisoned and landed safely near the launch pad, surviving without injuries.

Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said Russian Federation would fully share all relevant information with the USA, which pays up to $82 million per ride to the space station.

Hadfield said the three astronauts now living on the International Space Station "are basically marooned there - indefinitely at this point, until we can get another vehicle out there".

Russian Federation has continued to rely on Soviet-designed booster rockets to launching commercial satellites, as well as crews and cargo to the International Space Station. The Russian space agency also sent 70 rocket engines back to production lines in 2016 to replace broken parts. But Russia would like to avoid mothballing the station, he said.
